Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 from Bordeaux-based Asobo Studio is an absolutely brilliant way to melt your PC, especially the CPU, while showcasing some incredible technology. But is it fun? I think that depends on how fast the novelty of flying over your own home and landing on buildings dies out.
Catering heavily to aviation geeks is no bad thing, of course. It is, however, clear that Microsoft is going for a more ‘sky is the limit’ approach, as the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase reveals. Expect to be able do a whole lot more stuff.
This includes the bonkers Red Bull Air Race, air ambulance services, aerial advertising, VIP chartering, agricultural aviation, search and rescue, helicopter cargo transport, remote cargo operations, aerial firefighting, hot air balloons, blimps, towing gliders, pretending to be Maverick from Top Gun and taking in the wonderful Auroras of the north and south.
Not only that, you will be able to walk into a plane and around the cockpit and cabin, while airports – complete with passengers and moving traffic – look and feel more alive. At this rate overpriced shops and people who recline their seat will also be a thing. You can even capture the local wildlife on camera.
The big spinning spherical thing we call home is, of course, a big place. The big question then is how much of it will be as interactive as shown in the trailer. Not all of the 2020 game is the prettiest or most interesting, remember. Even if you had a PC good enough to run it.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be available on Windows PC, Steam and Xbox Series X and Series S. From day one it will be included within the Game Pass so no need to buy the full game. What about the release date? The 19th of November 2024.
In the meantime, feel free to check out my various Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 videos. Or start saving for a PC capable of running it at high settings. Or in VR. Subscribe to the Tribe. Take care, bye.
