Remember when I poked fun at the developers over the paid Chevrolet Apache DLC? Well, developer Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Home have redeemed themselves by making the SnowRunner Xbox Series X|S and PS5 next-gen update free (press play above).
Yes, if you have already purchased the SnowRunner Xbox One and PS4 versions or will do so in future, you will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version when the 31st of May release date arrives. Presumably it will be an automatic update on that date.
Those on PC will already have access to next-gen visuals, depending on the graphics card and general PC specs of course, while those on Nintendo Switch should be content with having Pokémon and Kirby.
So what does ‘next-gen’ mean for SnowRunner? The basic answer is ‘up to 4K visuals and 60 frames per second’ – twice the current frame rate on all console versions. More frames per second means a smoother experience.
Notice those two words, “up to”. This is because on PS5 and Xbox Series X you get the full 4K 60FPS experience. Meanwhile the weaker Series S will also do the same, however it upscales from 2K to 4K. In other words, it will be as smooth but probably not as visually impressive.
For those on PS5, I bring more good news: “The time has come to harness revolutionary physics and treacherously gorgeous environments on Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with added Haptic Feedback support to feel every nuance of terrain under the wheels,” the official press release reads.
Having spoken to the developers, I can confirm the visual changes in the next-gen version for those lucky enough to have bought a shiny new PlayStation or Xbox. You can expect improved shadow filtering with the addition of a soft penumbra.
Then there are improvements to the view distance so vegetation, buildings and other stuff should not pop out of nowhere. Shadow distance has been increased, too, using the PSSM technique. Short for parallel-split shadow maps.
And finally, grass will have improved shadows and object and terrain intersection blending has been improved. While it is hard to envision all of these graphical enhancements, I doubt many gamers will be disappointed. It is quite depressing how close my Series X is to my vastly more expensive PC.
Will frame rates hold up? I hope so, as I would take improved and consistent smoothness over visual detail most days of the week.
So to reiterate, the SnowRunner Xbox Series X|S and PS5 update is free and will continue to be after that 31st of May 2022 release date. So it is worth keeping an eye out for game sales of the original version if you do not yet own SnowRunner. If so, shame.
Awaiting a response from the developers, but cross-platform play has been promised so it would be unlikely if this is an impossibility.
Also awaiting a response, check back soon for any updates and be sure to subscribe to the Tribe.
