How to film car videos: My essential camera gear

Ben Griffin / A Tribe Called Cars

Curious how to film car videos that look and sound great? Here’s the camera gear I cannot live without, plus filming hacks, techniques, tips and tricks.

Whether you want to be the next Vehicle Virgins automotive YouTuber, make cool car commercials or film yourself driving, you have probably considered how to film car videos. But what about the camera gear you should use? I decided to share some insight into how I do things.

Now obviously you don’t need a fancy full-frame camera and audio recorder setup like I have. The video also sheds light on the techniques and thinking such as why I chose a lighter mirrorless over a DSLR and the benefits of a lapel microphone. Things that may help you make your videos look and sound even better.

My how to film a car video also gives a look at all the car reviews I have incoming, as well as an insight into my (slightly odd) life as a motoring journalist, something I’ve been for six years or so.

Before that, I was a technology journalist so I’ve always been a bit of a gadget nerd. My Grandpa is to blame for my love of photography as I inherited one of his old Leica lenses.

The plan is to make more of these automotive ‘how to’ guides. This includes including a look at a budget filming setup, how to use Audacity to improve sound quality and Premiere Pro CC editing tips. Plus there will be photography gear reviews and features. So subscribe and give it a like. Or ask me anything about how to film a car video.

For your information, I’ve listed every bit of camera equipment I used in the YouTube video description. Or you can check out my forthcoming Kit.co page. Now go be creative and make something cool!
