Is the 2020 Kia Soul EV a Tesla Model 3 rival?

Kia

In my 2020 Kia Soul EV video review, I see what this boxy battery electric car is all about and how it stacks up against the Kia e-Niro and Tesla Model 3. Press play for my one-take style roadtest, which includes details of the range, infotainment system, ride quality, performance figures and more.

Where do you start with the 2020 Kia Soul EV? Probably the boxy looks, although I’m not sure aesthetics matter so much. At least it stands out and is more visually brave than the Tesla Model 3.

Maybe the range, then? That would make more sense as the 280 miles it can go on a single charge is impressive. It’s almost that of the e-Niro SUV, which I rather liked when I drove it in South Korea.

Maybe the performance? Well, it’s all-electric and so you get all torque from zero revs. That means 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, a top speed of 103mph and lots of wheelspin action in the wet, as I found out during my test drive. Oops.

I could also bang on about the fact it’s a little bigger than its predecessor and no longer comes in petrol or diesel flavours. It has also been tweaked visually, something that has made it a little easier on the eye yet without diluting the boxy thing much.

A nod to the addition of a head-up display and its improved safety would also be worth mentioning, as you now get forward collision assist, lane assist and adaptive cruise control. All of those can make motorway mileage especially easy.

There’s a lot to say about the 2020 Kia Soul EV, to be honest. Probably why I bang on about it for 13 minutes in the video. At least you’ll come away knowing whether it’s worth buying compared with a Tesla Model 3 and Kia’s e-Niro. As usual, a big thank you for watching.
