Trail Out Halloween – A guide to Woods’ Nightmare: Redemption

All hell breaks loose and things get gory as I play the Trail Out Halloween update known as Woods’ Nightmare: Redemption. Here is how to beat every boss and some general tips.

I was once told that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. But, honestly, I would rather brave that than the demon-infested hell portrayed in the latest Trail Out Halloween update, Woods’ Nightmare: Redemption.

We are talking city streets lit by distant raging fires and patrolled by grotesque demons, great and small, who want nothing more than to make your stay in hell hellish. But escape is possible. Defeat all five bosses and Frank Woods gets to go to heaven.

The alternative is you do not bother with the Trail Out Halloween event and he lives out eternity in unbearable pain. But then you would miss out on a thoroughly amusing and enjoyable few hours of gameplay for free. Well, on top of the £15.49 or equivalent to buy it.

Not to mention one reward is the meanest looking Mini ever, complete with glowing ‘Sinner’ writing and wheels you really do not want to get run over by. Just complete it once and the Union Jack-toting A-class racer is yours to buy. Twice and you can look like your creepy Bane-inspired companion.

Three times and, presumably, the BatCar will be yours on the date mentioned. The 1st of November 2022. I have completed the event three times before this date and can confirm I do not have Batman’s car.

Of course, the only thing that stands in the way of redemption are those five bosses. Super muscly, super large or super creepy versions of the racers found in the career mode. So here are some tips on how to beat them and a general guide.

My final run took 43 minutes and I could have been a lot faster if I was not a total moron. Is it easy, Mr Tribe? Initially, no because if you die you start from scratch. Failing a run after an hour has serious Mega Drive and SNES gaming vibes and I secretly love it.

You can speed run it though, as the in-game leaderboard shows. Someone at developer Good Boys has managed under 16 minutes. Impressive, to say the least. Maybe they were possessed.

Trail Out Halloween: Tips & tricks

Right, a few pointers: Killing demons gives you green money sometimes. Drive over it to collect. Bigger zombies give you substantially more and bosses even more again. This money is used to repair your car, add a shield and buy weapons from the Hellshop, which is where you start.

You can return here at any time and you will be doing that a lot as enemies constantly punch, explode and shoot. What to buy? Those $1,199 Valkyrie missiles can nuke a small area and severely hurt bosses, but you can only purchase two at a time. These are great.

Meanwhile the $399 Flexnight is the second most useful weapon, not to mention the most colourful and tuneful, as its disco vibe causes all undead to throw shapes and ignore you.

There is also a Mine, $299, which is deployed out the back and does serious damage to anything that walks into it. And there is a breath thing called the Whisperer ($199) that can help if you get overrun or tip over, but it is the least useful.

You can also buy minigun ammo and absolutely should keep the shield topped up. It is possible to top-up ammo, mines and other stuff with coloured icons around the map, which saves you making as much money and therefore will save you time.

Also useful is the handbrake. Not because it stops you from the doom of rolling back at traffic lights, but because it lets you turn fast for quick escapes and point your guns at your foes, collect money faster and reduce the need to reverse when collecting power-ups.

At least one boss can scream you out of the vehicle, which is a proper oh s*** moment. Tap A or equivalent to sprint and use the kick function to right your car. Or run home to find another Sinner-mobile waiting for you. How did it get there? Nobody knows.

It is also worth pulsing the bonnet-mounted miniguns as they overheat and the cooldown period is long. I would also recommend prioritising those big-bellied demons for money and the easier bosses, which I will get to in a second.

Once you have mowed down some of hell’s minions, go and get the shield, more ammo and then save up for Valkyries, Flexnights and mines by farming demon-infested areas. Keep an eye out for a whistling dude with a backpack as he can drop money when shot. So long as his backpack is glowing green.

Okay, boss time. I have listed them in the order that worked for me and general annoyance.

1) Big Cheese (the face-sitter)

Big Cheese really lives up to half his name in the Trail Out Halloween special as he is the size of a house and wants to sit on your face. Fortunately, he is pretty slow and minigun damage slows him down. Run away, handbrake round and then shoot. Rinse and repeat.

To speed things up, lay down mines or just use Valkyrie missiles. You can actually cheese Big Cheese by driving just far enough away that he turns round in a big sulk. Those miniguns have a long range. Beat him, then deliver his soul to the Hellshop.

2) Frau Uber (the screamer)

Now it is time for Frau Uber. In demonic form she or it likes to scream your face off and knock you from the car. But she also enjoys dancing so chuck Flexnights in her path and then blast those miniguns. Mines are good too as she runs towards you. Learn to save missiles for later.

Ideally lure her to somewhere without demons such as the purple-lit road and keep her straight ahead by reversing. Eventually, she will wish she had stayed at home.

3) Yuji Than (the murdered)

Next up, Yuji Than. A demonic virgin thing who is hard to see and very fast. So treat her in the same way as Frau Uber. Get the party started with a Flexnight in the graveyard and then back up and lob Valkyrie missiles if you can afford or stick to miniguns and mines if you cannot.

Once the Flexnights run out, drive in circles and lay those mines. She will cross into them and then it is goodbye Yuji.

4) Sonya Mass (the blob)

Next we have Sonya Mass, who got the short straw in terms of demonic forms. At least, initially, as this is a four-part fight. The first three have her as a blob thing that lobs explosive blob things. Just fire everything you can and all will be fine. Clear the nearby demons if necessary.

Further down that same road, you will meet Sonya again. This time, as a blob thing that lobs blob things (this reminds me of Bob Loblaw’s law blog from Arrested Development). Anyway, her demonic friends carry shields and guns so stay far away and snipe.

As her demonic friends approach, ram them and shoot. Eventually they will lose an arm and therefore the ability to hold a shield. Rinse and repeat until all are gone.

In her third form, she is a blob thing that lobs blob things. A blob lobbing lob blob. This time, she has many friends so you might want to Valkyrie them to fiery dust or once again snipe from afar. Eventually, she will stop being a blob and fly.

At this point, hope she gets stuck in a tree as you can lob Valkyries at her until she is no more. Sometimes Flexnights work, but mines do not and the Whisperer just puts you dangerously close.

If she does not get stuck in a tree, get far enough away on the long straight roads and fire those missiles. Avoid her explosive projectiles and keep heading back to the Hellshop to restock until she is dead. Or undead. Whatever.

5) Joe Boomer (the Hulk)

And finally, Joe Boomer. When he is not telling young people how you only need to stop eating avocados to afford a home, he is a stompy demonic mess who makes the Hulk look like a twig. Now you could argue it is better to leave Sonya Mass until last – up to you.

The worst bit of this battle is getting to Joe Boomer, as this is where you find the most demonic zombie things with guns and riot shields. You can clear some demons with the Valkyrie missiles but they do respawn. So instead, I use speed. And power. Sounds familiar.

Head towards the red boss-indicating dot as fast as you can to minimise damage until you greet him at the end of the street. At this point, he will begin running at you so either lay a mine or three, fire a Valkyrie and run.

Do not stop until you are safe. Do not tip over, as I did. He is too fast for you to run away on foot. Chuck a Flexnight or two along the way to reduce the number of enemies trying to kill you. Or use a Valkyrie.

Restock your Flexnights, missiles, mines and minigun ammo and return to find him on that main straight. Now he will charge at you so make him dance, run into mines and either minigun or Valkyrie him until Boomer goes out with a boom. Deliver his coffin and celebrate.

A Trail Out style cutscene awaits you and, of course, the first of the three rewards. Remember that you need to have enough fans for A-class vehicles and can afford to buy it. It makes sense to wait until 1.1-million fans as that allows you to fully upgrade it, as opposed to wasting money on weaker parts.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, should help you spare Frank Woods from hell. Got any better tips? Let me and other Trail Out players know in the comments. Subscribe, like and enjoy All Hallows.
