The Hot Wheels Unleashed Monster Trucks expansion has arrived. Here is what it adds to the game and a look at all five big-wheelers.

Hot Wheels Unleashed is now onto the Volume 2 pass, following on from the Batman Expansion seen in volume 1. This time, we are getting the Monster Trucks Expansion as of the 21^st of April 2022 release date.

What do you get in the Hot Wheels Unleashed Monster Trucks Expansion?

The headline act for the new expansion are the five new monster trucks you get to own and drive: Bone Shaker, Race Ace, 5 Alarm, HW Demo Derby and Tiger Shark. More on these big-wheelers later.

The career mode map is also expanded, as it was with the Batman Expansion, to include ten new events with 4,000 gold coins along the way. Think time attacks and races, but sadly no reward for completing all of them.

Said Monster Trucks Expansion races take place in the new Stop Motion Studio. Here you get a mix of desert, jungle, quarry and ice. Things can get quite technical on the five new tracks so expect some intense racing.

The new tracks are called: Lights, Camera, Action!, Diorama Race, Behind the Scenes, Champion’s Cup and Director’s Cut.

You also get a new module to spice up a race and custom track – in this case, it is a large boulder swinging pendulum style across the track. No, I do not mean the drum and bass group from Australia. Even monster trucks will get knocked off the edge with this new obstacle.

Are the new monster trucks good?

Are the monster trucks good? Well, for one thing they are much larger than most vehicles so you are likely to win in a fight. Unless driving into another monster truck. Being large also means they can drive over or through some obstacles such as barriers without being affected.

Having a higher centre of gravity does mean they can be a bit tippy in corners so a slow in, fast out approach is beneficial. Plus they are more likely to fall off in tighter sections of track. As for which monster truck is best, the differences seem minimal.

How much does the expansion cost?

It is possible to buy the Hot Wheels Unleashed Monster Trucks Expansion separately for £12 or equivalent in your currency. Or you can go for the Hot Wheels Pass Volume 2, which includes an additional 9 vehicles, three themed customisation packs and three track builder modules.

The nine vehicles you get as part of the £25 expansion are the TMNT Michelangelo, Acceleracers Power Rage, Street Fighter Chun Li, Corvette Stingray Convertible 2014, McLaren Senna, Street Fighter Vega, TMNT Raffaello, Acceleracers Hollowback and the Street Fighter Ryu. Ken was better.

The customisation packs, which you can use to pimp your basement and player profile, are Outer Space, Skaters (Avril Lavigne not included) and Haunted. That should give you a rough idea what to expect in terms of what they include.

As for the Volume 2 track builder components, you get the Booster Slam, Gorilla Garage and Shark Jaws modules.

What about the Racing Season stuff?

Well, we are currently on the DC Super-Villains event, which is not part of either Hot Wheels Pass volume 1 or volume 2. Expect to pay £5 or equivalent for access to the new vehicles and items you get from levelling up in this mode. I’m still sad I missed the Spongebob SquarePants Racing Season.
